Can you imagine having a bunch of shepherds show up at your door saying that some angels told them to come see your child? Can you imagine some wise men from a foreign country who have come to give extravagant gifts to your son? This week we want to take a closer look at these wise men who traveled a great distance to worship God’s Son. They spared no expense and let no distance hold them back. Table Talk 12-12-11

12 Dec

In Jesus’ day, shepherds were looked down upon by most people. They were considered dirty, smelly outcasts who were outsiders. However, God loves people like shepherds, people who are loners and weak in the eyes of the world. It is so amazing and so fitting that God would send special messengers to the shepherds to tell them about the birth of His Son. Even from the beginning, we see that salvation doesn’t just belong to the rich or the powerful, in fact, “Salvation has come for everyone,” even the people we look down on the most.

Table Talk 12-5-11

5 Dec

For the month of December, we are going to jump forward a bit in God’s Story. The birth of Jesus is the beginning of the climax of God’s Story. For many, many generations, God has been planning salvation for a sinful world. Now that salvation is here through the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and God in human flesh. We know that the God’s Story shows us that we sinned, but God saved us. Now that salvation has finally come through Jesus Christ. Remember that Big Idea “God came to the earth to save us.”

Table Talk 11-28-11

28 Nov

Every month we want to review what we’ve learned about the Story of God. This month we saw that “God can even use bad things for good,” “God hears His people,” and “God shows us how much we need Him.” These are such amazing truths to experience and they should encourage us as we move forward. Take some time today to talk about what has happened in God’s story so far and how see the story being fulfilled in Jesus. He should always be the focus because He is the focus of God’s Story.

Table Talk 11-21-11

21 Nov

When we look at the 10 Commandments, I think it’s tempting to simply think of it as a list of rules that we need to follow. However, I think they show us who God is, what He is like, and what He values most. These commandments were meant to set the Israelites apart from other nations making them so that they could display God’s glory to the world. The sacrifices required when one broke the commandments were also designed to show us how much we need God and His grace. This brings us to the Big Idea, “God show us how much we need Him.” When we fail to keep God’s law, it should make us look to Him for mercy and grace and He will give it to us! Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of these commandments and He kept them even though we could not.

Telephone

18 Nov

Make a “telephone” with two paper or plastic cups and a string. In order for it to work, you must keep the string pulled tight. Say the memory verse to each other and then talk about how God always hears his people. For instructions on how to make a cup and string “telephone”, visit http://pbskids.org/zoom/activities/sci/stringtelephone.html.
